Get Healthy Carson City: Health department and animal services reach out to community

This column addresses topics related to the health of our community.

The staff of Carson City Health and Human Services and Carson City Animal Services is excited - and very busy - this time of year. On the heels of last weekend's successful free flu vaccine event, two more events are scheduled this weekend to reach out to members of our community.

Saturday, Carson City Animal Services will show off their newly renovated facility at 3770 Butti Way during the first annual Carson Animal Rescue Event (CARE). The public is invited to come meet animals that are available for adoption, learn about Animal Services, and meet veterinarians, groomers, and other animal care professionals from around Carson City.

This noteworthy event is designed to raise awareness of the important role Animal Services plays in our community. The mayor will be present for a ribbon-cutting to kick off the event at 11 a.m. Also, local author Rosalie Pope will be in attendance to talk about her book, "Puppies for Sale: $25." Refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle and face painting for children.

Also Saturday, Health and Human Services will host the Homeless Connect Event. Each Fall, Carson City Health and Human Services partners with local agencies, health care providers, and service organizations to host Homeless Connect. This event is an opportunity for those in our community who are homeless to receive services, including medical screening, immunizations, haircuts, pet care, legal counsel and more.

This year, Homeless Connect will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Event organizers anticipate the need in our community to be very great this year due to the tough economy. We are asking for donations to be distributed at the Homeless Connect Event. If you have any used clothing or shoes in good condition that you no longer wear, or any reusable shopping bags that you never remember to take to the store, we could put them in the hands of people who would really appreciate them. Also needed are hygiene items: soaps, deodorant, shampoo, razors, lotions, toothbrushes and toothpaste. All donations for Homeless Connect can be brought to the Health and Human Services building at 900 E. Long Street during normal business hours.
