Today marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Like you, I remember where I was on that tragic day, teaching at a school in Montana and preparing for the day with students.
I am still shaken when I hear stories or see video clips of the events of that day, but living through that day is completely different. Sociology students at CHS were honored on Thursday to have Ann Silver present her story and experiences of 9/11.
Silver was in the North Tower on that day in New York City. She was able to escape the building before it crumbled to the ground and ran 40 blocks to safety to reunite with her family members. Her profound presentation to the students serves as a reminder that life is so precious.
When asked by a student if she takes different precautions now, she said "I don't believe in living in fear, I believe in living in strength."
To honor our fallen victims of 9-11, Carson High School will take a moment of silence Monday.
CHS Carneta wins award
Congratulations to teacher Patt Quinn-Davis and her yearbook students. For the 11th time since the 1999-2000 edition, the 2011 Carneta yearbook has been inducted into Walsworth Company's Gallery of Excellence, which is a collection of the company's top yearbooks.
Approximately 5 percent of the company's books receive this yearly award. As a member of the gallery, the 2011 Carneta is used by Walsworth representatives in schools throughout the country as an example of yearbook excellence.
The CHS Carneta staff is now collecting orders for the 2012 Carneta. Buddy ads, which congratulate CHS students, are again available for sale.
Presently, the staff is offering last year's buddy ad prices until the end of October. And, business ads are also available for sale to be included in the 2012 edition. For complete information, call Patt Quinn-Davis, adviser, at 283-1782.
Carson High School Safe Grad 2012 and beyond
What does it take to keep 200-300 Carson High School senior graduates entertained, fed and safe throughout the evening and early morning hours after their graduation? And the answer is: A huge amount of planning and funding.
The Safe Grad committee is in the process of beginning the planning for Safe Grad 2012 and beyond.
Please consider getting involved in the planning phrase this year. The committee desperately needs volunteers to ensure that the event will continue.
Parents of freshmen, sophomores and juniors are particularly encouraged so that they can relax a little when their students become graduating seniors.

Student council
hosts conference
In November, Carson High will be hosting the Western Regionals Conference. This conference hosts more than 400 students from over 20 high schools throughout the western region of Nevada.
The purpose of the conference is to provide leadership training to student councils so members can be agents of change at their own schools.
Carson High's Student Council has been working on the conference since July. Every weekend students work on decorations so the school can be transformed into a conference center for this great event.
Garage/Craft Sale
CHS will be hosting Have a Heart Market on Oct. 8 in the north parking lot from 7 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
We encourage garage sale vendors and crafters to participate. You can reserve spots to sell your goods for $25.
Proceeds from the market will go towards the fundraising efforts for Linda Peton, staff member and heart transplant recipient.

Senior Spotlight
CHS is proud to spotlight senior Tim Grunert. He maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.7.
Tim has served our school tirelessly and enthusiastically since his freshman year of high school as part of CHS Student Council. This year he is serving as student body president.
Tim is passionate about his leadership roles, also serving as the western region representative to the Nevada Association of Student Council's state board.
Aside from leadership, he also swims on the CHS varsity swim team and the Carson Tigersharks, is a member of National Honor Society, and is a member of the First United Methodist Youth Group.
Over the summer, he participated in a week-long high school leadership camp in Portola, Calif., attended the Western Leaders Camp for the State Board, and also attended the Advanced Medical Conference in Chicago.
Tim's top two college choices are Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif., and Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore.
He hopes to pursue a degree in medicine. Thank you Tim for your academic and extracurricular contributions to CHS!
