One dead, two injured in Coleville blast

One person is dead and two injured in an explosion and fire that destroyed one of the residential structures at the Mountain Warfare Training Center Base Housing in Coleville.

The Mono County Sheriff's Office dispatch received several 911 calls about the blast at 8:53 p.m. Friday night.

A Marine spokesman said the fire was related to a propane tank. The location of the fire within the housing complex located 20 miles south of Gardnerville was in the back.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the residence engulfed in fire. They battled the blaze as medics helped the victims of the blast.

Careflight responded and two of the victims were helicoptered to hospitals out of the area, with one other person being pronounced dead at the scene.

Mono County Social Services responded and opened the Walker Community Center for use as a shelter, and the Red Cross was contacted out of both California and Nevada.

Fire units from the Antelope Valley Fire Department, Mountain Warfare Training Center Fire Department, Mono County Paramedics, Mono County Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol, Mountain Warfare Training Center Police Department, along with the East Fork Fire district units from southern Douglas County.
