NBC breakfast meeting Wednesday in Reno

Nevada Business Connections' next monthly networking breakfast will take place at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Atlantis Casino Report & Spa, 3800 S. Virginia St., Reno.

Heidi Gansert, Gov. Brian Sandoval's chief of staff, will be the keynote speaker.

Doors open and networking will begin at 7:30 a.m. Cost is $20 per member and $30 per guest.

Musicians welcome to join jazz jam session

A jazz jam session will be held from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Wednesday at Plan: b Microlounge inside the Sassafras, 318 N. Carson St.

The session will be hosted by Judith Ames, vocals and Rocky Tatarelli, tenor sax, featuring Peter Supersano on piano and Neil Strocchio on drums.

All jazz musicians are welcome and food will be available.

Learn what to do in a pet emergency

Carson City 4 Paws 4-H Dog Club is hosting an evening with Peggy Rew, American Red Cross Certified Pet First Aid Instructor, from 6:30-8 p.m. March 8, at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall on Clear Creek Road.

Area 4-H'ers, the public, youth and adults, are invited to attend a question and answer session about assembling a pet first aid kit and discussion on minor techniques to use when unexpected situations happen with pets. Discussion also will include how to take a Red Cross Dog and Cat First Aid and CPR class.

Rew was honored as a Real Hero by the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross last March. She is the only certified Red Cross pet first aid instructor in Nevada. Her goal, within Red Cross certification classes, is to prepare pet owners for just about every emergency situation.

The Carson City Roadrunner RV Club's February lunch meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Grandma Hatties restaurant.

Scholarship offered by Soroptimist International of Carson City

Soroptimist International of Carson City is offering a new scholarship opportunity for female students who will be attending college during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The Mary Coffey Scholarship will provide $1,500 during the 2012-2013 academic year for one female college student from Carson City or Douglas County. The scholarship will be presented to a woman who is pursuing a course of study that leads to a career focused on improving the lives of women. The recipient also will exhibit a strong commitment to community service.

Volunteers sought for cultural commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals who may be interested in serving on the Carson City Cultural Commission.

The purpose of the commission is to serve as the official advisor to the supervisors on matters related to the cultural life of the community. It is to create an environment that encourages excellence by area artists and cultural organizations and to strengthen the awareness and involvement of all citizens in the community's cultural life, both in heritage and artistic expression. It also establishes the priorities necessary to achieve these goals in concert with representatives from the public and private sectors.

There is one opening for a citizen-at-large to fill a three-year term, expiring January 2015.

The commission meetings are held at least quarterly, lasting two or three hours. Additional time may be spent on special projects and sub-committee work. Applicants should be prepared for a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month. All members serve without compensation and must be residents of Carson City.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to Carson City Executive Offices, 201 N. Carson Street #2. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Free ceramics classes offered

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will offer free ceramics classes on Saturday. Participants only pay a supply fee for the materials.

Adults will learn how to paint an Italian design on an individual bread plate with a dipping dish.

Children 5-7 will paint a heart- or star-shaped cup with a plain salad plate.

The supply fee is $20 for one set of Italian design dishes or the children's cup and salad plate.

On March 31, adults will learn how to paint a flower or sponge paint design on a large soup bowl and saucer. Children 5-7 can paint these two pieces with a sponge paint design or opt to paint a flower pot candle holder or a flower pot and saucer.

The supply fee is $27 for each set of cup and saucer.

Couple to teach how to grow shitake mushrooms

Dan and Rachel McClure, Owners of Nevada's Own Perennials, will give a seminar on shitake (blue oyster) mushrooms at Greenhouse Garden Center between 1-2 p.m. Saturday.

The McClures will talk about how to grow these mushrooms from a kit, and they'll give cooking demonstrations for preparing the mushrooms as well as recipes.

Reservations are required for this class and the cost is $35, which includes a mushroom kit.
