New unemployment claims continued to decline in February, with fewer people seeking benefits than during the same month of the previous year.
A spokesman for the Employment Security Division said that is 27 straight months of year-over-year reductions in new claim filings.
The chief economist for the division, Bill Anderson, said that indicates an "ongoing stabilization in Nevada's labor market."
But he added that, while claims are falling, the 17,336 new claims in February is still well above what he said would be consistent with a healthy labor market - 10,000-12,000 new claims a month.
"So, while the decline in new claims is an encouraging sign, the high level of claims overall reveals that Nevada still has a long road to full recovery," he said.
