Auction funds scholarship

A silent auction will be open to the community Friday at Silver State Charter School as a fundraiser for the school's in-house scholarship.

"It's always worth the while to stop by," said counselor Beth Haddad. "We get all kinds of stuff. We probably have close to 100 items."

She said the raffle items are from a variety of businesses from Carson City, Reno and Gardnerville with a wide range of services.

The school awards the scholarship each year, based on the need of the student.

"We want it to go to a kid who will actually use it - someone who wants to go on to college or a vocational school but may not be able to do it otherwise. We're pointing the kids in the right direction."

The amount of the scholarship is determined by the amount raised at the auction, Haddad said. Last year, it raised $2,000.

The public is invited to browse the auction from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the school's new campus, 788 Fairview Drive. Donations will also be accepted. For information, call Silver State Charter School at 883-7900.
