3G seeks gaming licenses

3G Studios last week filed for approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board for multiple Online Service Provider's licenses, the first step for the Reno-based software developer to develop and launch a U.S.-based poker Web site that uses real currency.

A federal judge in August deemed poker a game of skill, which opened the door for online poker sites to states with legalized gambling. Nevada joined Delaware in legalizing online gambling, and at least 10 other states are expected to follow suit next year.

The site being developed by 3G Studios initially will be restricted to Nevada residents, and geo-location software will be deployed to ensure gamblers are located in Nevada when they place wagers.
