Iron Nation Motorcycle Club will hold its 12th annual Never Forget 9/11 Motorcycle Run in Carson City on Sept. 14, moving it to the capital city for the first time.
The Reno/Sparks club, which includes both male and female members, in prior years has raised more than $160,000 and donates proceeds to the Nevada Military Support Alliance, according to Carol Baumann, spokeswoman for the club and event. The alliance supports Nevada families of fallen or injured military personnel with ties to the state.
Baumann said the goal this year is $20,000 or more from the fundraising ride and associated activities.
The event was moved to the capital in part because the Carson City Harley-Davidson dealership is helping, and much of the day will be spent there, where live music, food and raffle prizes are a part of the gathering and ride. Kinder’s Meats Deli & BBQ of Reno will be on hand to provide the food.
“We always have a great showing,” Baumann said as event details were coming together. “We’re right on track. We’re still dialing things in.”
She said Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell has agreed to appear, and Gov. Brian Sandoval also has been invited.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the second Saturday in September at Carson City Harley-Davidson, but preregistration is encouraged and the first 150 doing so receive a pin and ride shirt for the day. They also commemorate event participation and support. The cost is $20 for a single and $30 for a double entry.
The ride through Carson City is at noon, and barbecue will be served at 1 p.m. back at Harley-Davidson, according to Baumann.
Organizers say the first such Iron Mountain run was Sept. 11, 2002, a year after the attack on the East Coast that claimed 2,996 lives.
“These horrible cowards murdered innocent men, women and children,” said a flier put out by organizers to seek tax-deductible donations and provide details on the event remembering the victims. “Loved ones were lost. Lives were destroyed. We will never forget that tragic day.”
Organizers say once again they are seeking tax-deductible donations.
