2 new specialty license plates available soon

Specialty license plates for the Air Force Thunderbirds and Nevada Health Centers will be available at Nevada DMV metro offices Aug. 12 and rural offices by Aug. 15. The specialty plates will cost $61 initially and $30 at each renewal. The organizations will receive $25 per plate from the initial issue and $20 from renewals.

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron was formed in 1953 at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. They were known as the “Star Dusters.” Their plate is stamped with the two-letter “SD” designation, pointing to the team’s origin. Since 1956 the team has been based at Nellis AFB, Nevada. The plate design features the squadron’s red, white and blue F-16 Fighting Falcons often seen over the skies of Las Vegas in their signature “Delta” formation. Proceeds from the license plate sales will support the Nevada State Veterans Home.

“Las Vegas has a huge veteran and retiree population,” said Lt. Col. Greg Moseley, Thunderbirds commander. “It feels good for us to celebrate our 60-year history while giving back to those who have supported us for so many decades.”

The Nevada Health Centers plate will support the organization’s Mammovan, which travels in each of Nevada’s 17 counties to provide mammograms to uninsured women and those who do not have such screenings nearby.
