Mark Cyr: The Magi knew what Christmas was really about

I love this time of year, when we intentionally revisit the stories surrounding the birth of our Savior. My favorite has always been the Magi, what has become to be known as the “Three Wise Men.” These mysterious men have always fascinated me.

The Gospel of Mathew reads: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.’ (2:1-2)” These Magi truly knew what Christmas was about. They saw this star that declared the birth of Christ, the King of the Jews, and started looking for him so they could worship him. They just wanted to worship the new born king.

In Hebrews we read that God rewards “those who earnestly seek him (11:6).” The Gospel of John quotes Jesus as saying we “must worship in spirit and in truth (4:24).” Does the season of Christmas help us truly seek God? Are we able to look past all the lights and parties and truly find the presence of Christ? These Magi from the east could.

It can be a challenge in today’s busy world to set aside time to seek God and spend time in His presence, but that is the way to truly honor Christ on Christmas. Don’t feel that the trees, presents and lights are bad, but remember the primary focus should be on Jesus.

So this Christmas, let’s join these Magi from the east and find the presence of Christ so that we may worship him.

Merry Christmas and God bless to each and every one of you!
