2 Carson men overdose on heroin; 1 dies

One man is dead and another was hospitalized, then jailed, after two separate heroin overdoses Wednesday, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Two others are facing charges in connection with the second overdose, including a felony of maintaining a drug house.

Police responded to a call at 10:38 a.m. in the 2000 block of Menlo Drive, where a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. Drug paraphernalia was found at the scene, he said.

The Sheriff’s Office isn’t naming him until his family members have been notified of his death.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a second call at 5:26 p.m. at the 3600 block of Imperial Drive, where Richard Vonderscher, 45, had reportedly overdosed on heroin. He was transported to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and was arrested at 9:40 p.m., shortly after being discharged.

Two others were arrested at 7:20 p.m. in the apartment, where bath salts were allegedly found, along with seven hypodermic needles and more than 60 prescription drugs.

Ann Syphus-Freed, 48, was arrested suspicion of maintaining a drug house, a felony. She was also on suspicion of possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, a gross misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Her bail was set $20,000.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $1,000.

Vonderscher was arrested on suspicion of unlawful use of a controlled substance, a felony, and misdemeanors possession of a hypodermic device and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $2,500.

Two overdoses in a day is uncommon for Carson City, Sgt. Brian Humphrey said.

“It makes you wonder what’s in the heroin,” he said. “What are they putting in it?”
