$500 reward for Reno park acid bomb suspects

RENO — Secret Witness in Reno is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of suspects who left explosive devices at Rancho San Rafael Park.

Park rangers discovered the so-called “acid bombs” made in plastic bottles about 6:30 a.m. Thursday near a picnic pavilion bathroom at the north-side park.

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies say the plastic bottles filled with volatile household cleaners and other ingredients create internal gas that can cause the container to explode. They go by a number of names, including chemical bombs, Drano bombs and MacGyver bombs.

In addition to spraying boiling hot liquid, the exploding bottles can send sharp plastic flying at a high velocity.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 775-328-3320 or Secret Witness, 322-4900.
