The volunteer connection

This continues RSVP’s regular Sunday column of outstanding volunteer opportunities. There are some really terrific positions open that should fit your talents. Lack of transportation is the greatest deterrent to accessing lifesaving services. Seniors need volunteers to drive them to medical appointments and with running errands. RSVP provides mileage reimbursement for drivers, aged 25 and older. We also have vans if you prefer not to use your own vehicle. RSVP also can assist persons with disabilities, aged 18 and older, with transportation at no charge.

RSVP needs volunteers to serve as friendly companions to seniors who are home alone during the day. These folks need a friend who will call on them from time to time and visit, and maybe help with some small tasks or in some instances have lunch and play cards or games.

4-H Club leaders needed. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is looking for dedicated, fun and creative individuals to lead local 4-H youth programs through the Carson City and Storey County area. Long term and short term program projects include small animals, pocket pets, golf, biking, AT, shooting sports, fishing, GPS/ Orienteering, robotics, rockets, fine arts, photography, woodworking, sewing, livestock and more.

Carson City Fire Department is in need of office assistant volunteers to perform receptionist and data entry functions including answering phones, greeting customers, and entering emergency medical services incident information into Firehouse data bases. These positions require basic computer and spreadsheet knowledge. Clerical experience is a plus. Contact August for further position details.

The Trading Post of the Northern Nevada Correctional Center allows inmates to share their talents with the local community while engaging in healthy artistic outlets. Recently the governor has awarded the Trading Post the opportunity of producing all screen printed and embroidered clothing for the State of Nevada 150 year Sesquicentennial Celebration. The Trading Post is looking for a store keepers to perform store sales and sale reporting in a retail environment. Sales and customer service experience is a plus.

Computer Corps needs technical, administrative and facilities volunteers. Computer Corps allows low income families and individuals who cannot afford a computer system to apply for a computer at no cost.

Nevada State Museum is looking for fun energetic volunteers to serve as tour guides for the many museum visitors who regularly visit. Schedules are flexible and training provided.

The Brewery Arts Center has many volunteer opportunities, including ACCtv Media Center receptionist, event ushers, program and publicity assistant and landscape and maintenance assistant.

The Nevada State Health Insurance Assistance Program seeks volunteers to assist beneficiaries on Medicare and related health insurance issues. They must be patient, enjoy working with seniors and be available at least six hours per month. Eighteen hours of SHIP training will be provided.

Cat lovers of Carson City are needed for cat socialization, local Saturday adoption events and other services important to cats’ welfare. Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation welcomes your help for their temporary housing of cats until they are adopted.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers to act as daytime building monitors and custodians and do some maintenance work.

Carson City Literacy seeks volunteers to teach people of all ages to read. A one-year commitment with two hours per week are required. Training will be provided.
