The Great Balloon sponsored by the New York Daily Graphic: A great crowd visited to witness the departure of the big balloon from New York to Europe. The balloon was inflated with gas. When it was almost filled, it ripped half way round with a great tearing. The volume of gas escaped and nearly suffocated those who stood on the inside ... The crowd watching made a rush over the rope in order to tear up the canvas into small pieces for mementoes ...

Street preacher: At the sermon Sunday evening the street preacher had his sermon. He has a great many friends in Carson and is earnest and eloquent. He and his wife never pass the hat but live by voluntary contributions. He predicts the end of the world in seven years.

70 Years Ago

Birthday: Mrs. Nellie Davis celebrates her 99th birthday. She is a living portrayal of the history of Nevada where she has been a resident for 77 years. In 1866, she came to Carson City as a bride after marrying H. R. Mighels a year after he became owner of the Carson City Daily Appeal. She rode to Carson City on the stagecoach when Hank Monk was the driver. After the death of her editor husband, H. R. Mighels, she managed and edited the Appeal until she married Sam Davis.

Gaming license: Gov. Grant Sawyer said his policy on Nevada’s legalized gambling is clear and simple: “keep a clean house or get out.” Frank Sinatra played host to an underworld figure at Sinatra’s Cal-Neva Lodge at Lake Tahoe. The Gaming Board hopes to have Sinatra’s gaming license revoked ...
