Bell group prepares for national performance

Reno’s Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble presents Greetings from Tintab, a spring concert series to raise money for the group’s first national tour later this month to North Carolina.

The group will perform at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St.; at 3 p.m. Saturday at South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe; and at 6 p.m. Monday at Great Basin Brewery, 846 Victorian Ave. in Sparks.

The series weaves stories from the group’s past with modern bell literature. Traditional folk songs, smooth jazz, and classic rock are all part of the concert.

Boy Scout Troop to have booth at flea market

Carson City Boy Scout Troop 341 is hosting a booth at The Flying Pig Flea Market today. The Boy Scouts are selling items to help offset the cost of summer camp and a backpacking trip. The market will take place at the Pony Express Pavilion. There’s a $2 admission fee.

Judges sought for Run What Cha Brung show

Karson Kruzers seeks judges for its annual Run What Cha Brung car, truck and motorcycle show to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28. Training for judges will be at 9:30 a.m. June 28 at Fuji Park.

Individuals must be 18 or older to be a judge. Those selected will be given dinner, a commemorative goodie bag and free soda and water during training and judging.

Patrol increases focus on impaired drivers

Law enforcement officers working with the Joining Forces program are increasing patrols for impaired drivers and riders through July 6.

Behaviors that can indicate impaired drivers and motorcycle riders include drifting during a turn or a curve, inattentiveness to surroundings, inappropriate or unusual behavior and weaving. Law enforcement officers encourage motorists to call 911 if they witness drivers and riders that may be impaired.

Library hosts cross-country cycling team Monday

The Carson City Library will host the 2014 Spokes team, a group of seven science, technology, engineering and mathematics students and alumni from Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Columbia University who are cycling from San Francisco, Calif., to Washington, D.C., to raise the issue of education reform.

The team, which stops along the way at public schools and libraries to teach hands-on, project-oriented classes, will run a learning festival on Monday at the Carson City Library. Children can learn about circuits by building a laser transmitter, or about design and tools by taking apart bicycles and building something new.

Jean Wilcox Hibben, a board-certified genealogist who was lead researcher for last year’s PBS program “Genealogy Roadshow” and Lynn H. “Butch” Hibben will talk about genealogy at Douglas County Genealogy Group’s meeting at 1 p.m. July 3 at Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Jean is a California-based national speaker, family historian and vice president of the Genealogy Speakers Guild. The Hibbens’ program is geared for those interested in and fascinated by genealogy and family history research.

Free course about mental illness offered

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Western Nevada will offer a 12-week NAMI Family-to-Family course for family members and partners of adults with mental illness from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 24 to July 31 at Calvary Chapel, 1635 Clearview Drive.

NAMI-trained individuals who have experienced supporting an adult family member with mental illness in his or her recovery will teach the free course, which offers current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders.

The courses will also focus on medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence; research about biology of brain disorders and treatments; and information about understanding the experience of a person with mental illness. There will be workshops about problem solving, listening, and communication techniques. Strategies for coping and handling crises and relapse will be presented.
