RENO — Nevada’s attorney general says the Washoe County School Board violated the state’s open meetings law when it ousted School Superintendent Pedro Martinez.
Deputy Attorney General George Taylor said in a complaint filed in Washoe District Court Tuesday the board trustees violated the law at least six different ways on July 22 when they questioned Martinez about his status as a CPA and fired him later that day.
Board President Barbara Clark insisted the trustees only placed Martinez on administrative leave, and he later returned to his job.
The attorney general complaint concludes it was a firing, but was done illegally and now is void.
A lawyer for the school district says each of the six trustees named in the complaint has agreed to pay a $250 fine under a settlement agreement.
