Curator’s talk to offer window into Nevada’s art scene

City Arts Initiative will present a talk by curator JoAnne Northrup, whose illustrated talk, Bringing the World to Northern Nevada, will take a look at major projects planned at the Nevada Museum of Art.

The presentation is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 E. Proctor St. An informal reception for Northrup will precede the event; doors open at 6:15 p.m. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Over the past three years as director of contemporary art initiatives at the Nevada Museum of Art, JoAnne Northrup has organized major exhibitions featuring internationally acclaimed artists. In her Nevada Neighbors talk, she will outline some of her major projects over the past three years and give hints of what to can expect at the museum in the years ahead.

While at Nevada Museum of Art, Northrup launched a robust collection program, published catalogues, and organized museum trips to Berlin, Venice, New York, and Tel Aviv. In bringing international artists to the attention of Northern Nevada through these programs, she continues establishing the Nevada Museum of Art as a significant player in the international contemporary art world.

Northrup was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Scholarship and based her research at ZKM Center for Art + Media in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2011. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She worked in various curatorial capacities at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University, the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and the Musée de Grenoble in France.

As part of her CCAI visit, Northrup will give her talk to art students and faculty at Dayton and Douglas high schools and Sierra Nevada College.
