Sierra Lutheran High School is taking the next step in growing into a full-scale high school.
Miles Construction, which built the school’s current campus on Romans Road, is constructing a multi-purpose athletics field at the school.
Pastor Juls Clausen, the school’s principal, said as the school has grown, the need for an expanded physical education program has grown as well.
“In the last three years, we’ve grown substantially,” he said. “And we anticipate continued growth.”
Clausen said there are currently about 125 students in grades 9 through 12 but that the existing building has the capacity for up to 600.
With legislation approved by the 2015 Legislature creating educational savings accounts for parents seeking alternatives to the public K-12 system, he said he hopes the school will expand even more.
He describes the school as an innovative, faith-based college preparatory program for students.
“We feel like we do a great job as a college prep school as well as the spiritual side of things,” Clausen said.
Once the field is complete, he said they hope to add a football team and possibly a soccer team down the road.
But it will take a while even though the construction work will be done in September.
“It takes time for grass to grow,” Clausen said.
The field will be ready for games next summer, providing yet another sports venue in Carson City.
Sierra Lutheran has been open since 2002 but moved from Minden to Carson City in 2010.
