6 unions endorse Democrat Ruben Kihuen in House race that’s crowded

LAS VEGAS — Six labor unions are endorsing Democratic Nevada state Sen. Ruben Kihuen in the crowded race for Rep. Cresent Hardy’s congressional seat.

Kihuen’s campaign said Thursday that the six unions supporting him have more than 23,000 members combined. They include the IATSE Local 720, the Ironworkers Local 433, Laborers Local 872, and Teamsters Local 14, 631 and 986.

The groups issued a combined statement saying Kihuen had fought tooth and nail this spring against Republican-led efforts to curb collective bargaining.

Kihuen is in a competitive four-way Democratic primary to take freshman Republican Hardy’s 4th Congressional District seat. Kihuen’s opponents include Lucy Flores, John Oceguera and Susie Lee.

The state’s largest labor group, the Culinary Workers Union, has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race.
