Nevada officials say they’ve found a way to fill most of the $162 million shortfall in the state’s budget through a combination of reserve funds and unpaid days off for public employees.
State budget officials detailed the proposal to lawmakers at an Interim Finance Committee meeting on Thursday after announcing the budget shortfall in December.
Legislators were asked to approve moving around $108 million from reserve funds to help patch the shortfall. The budget office also proposed a number of other cost-saving measures including reducing higher education salaries by $6.6 million and saving $20 million by adding two days of unpaid leave for certain state workers.
Lawmakers said they expect to pass three to five bills to alleviate the budget shortfall in the first weeks of the legislative session.
