Nevada Legislature: Lawmaker proposing constitutional change to create lottery

A Nevada Assemblyman is bringing forward a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to create and run a lottery.

Democratic Assemblyman Harvey Munford introduced AJR6 on Tuesday on the Assembly floor. The resolution would allow the state Legislature to create and manage a lottery, and require lottery profits support public education and senior citizens.

The Las Vegas Democrat said the resolution would help increase state revenues without burdensome tax increases.

Las Vegas Sands’ spokesman Ron Reese said the casino company would oppose the legislation.

The resolution would need to be approved by two consecutive legislative sessions before going to the voters in 2018 for final approval.
