Nevada schools will keep same star rankings for another year

Nevada schools are expected to keep the same star rankings for at least another year.

The Nevada Board of Education approved a state proposal Thursday to carry over the 2013-2014 star rankings to the current school year. Education officials have been discussing the option for months because Nevada schools are switching over to more rigorous standards and a different testing system.

The state wants to establish baseline scores under the new system before reflecting schools’ growth through the star rankings.

Education department spokeswoman Judy Osgood said the rankings could be further complicated by ongoing technical problems with a computerized standardized testing system.

It’s unclear whether all Nevada students will be able to take their tests this year because of the glitches, and that could prevent the collection of baseline data.
