DEBATE gears up for nationals

CHS Speech and Debate will be holding several fundraisers to help cover the cost of the National Tournament this June in Dallas. The team will have a booth at the 150th celebration at the Nevada Appeal, 580 Mallory Way on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The team will have information on the national topics, what debate is, state politics, a raffle, and have tickets to all its other events. On Saturday night, the Carson High debate will host the first Escape Carson High Zombie Run. Runners will be given flag football tags and have to travel through a course across campus. Along the way there will be zones with zombies. The zombies will try to take the flags from the runners. Runners who make it to the end of the course with their flags may turn them in for raffle tickets to win prizes. Tickets are $10. The minimum age is 12. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the events. Minors will need to have their ticket signed by a parent to gain access to the course.

From 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 the team will host an exhibition in the upstairs cafeteria of Carson High School. This will be an interactive event where we will showcase each event the team competed in during the season. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

From 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 the team will host a dinner theater at Sassafras Eclectic food joint. Tickets for this event are $10 to get in the door and must be purchased in advance as seating is limited.

From 5-9 p.m. on Sunday, May 31 Bully’s is partnering with Speech and Debate. Patrons that bring in a ticket will have 15 percent of their check donated to the team and receive a 10 percent off coupon for a future visit. For questions, contact Patrick Mobley at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the senior spotlight is on Sara Session. Sara currently has a 4.24 weighted GPA and a senior course load filled with Honors and AP courses. Sara is involved both at the school and community levels. As a member of the Carson High School theater program, Sara has been a part many of the plays the group has put on. She has also been involved in community theater since second grade. Sara has been a Girl Scout since first grade, giving a speech at the Women in Leadership ceremony three times. Sara volunteers her time with Food for Thought, a local program that provides meals and snacks to students who might otherwise go without. Sara also tutors struggling students after school. Sara is planning to attend Santa Clara University where she’s unsure about her major. Whatever she will choose, we are certain she will be successful. Carson High School is proud of Sara and we wish her much luck in college and beyond.

Angila Golik is a government teacher at CHS and a member of Senator Pride.
