Ron Wood Center to honor First Lady Kathleen Sandoval

The Ron Wood Family Resource Center has named First Lady Kathleen Sandoval its Community Leader of the Year.

She is the sixth person to receive that award.

The event will be held at the Governor’s Mansion Saturday, May 16 beginning at 2 p.m. and features an evening of “wine, food, music and friends as we honor our First Lady’s contributions to our community.”

The event is a benefit to help support the resource center with tickets set at $50 per person for those wishing to attend.

Mrs. Sandoval is Director of Operations at the Children’s Cabinet in Reno.

She has a master’s in speech language pathology and, as First Lady, champions literacy, early childhood education, child mental health and women’s health initiatives.

Children’s Cabinet provides services to children in the area through a cooperative effort between the private sector and public agencies. In the past year, the organization helped more than 11,000 families through more than 30 programs and services including providing food and shelter, transitional living and crisis intervention among other services.

The Ron Wood Center was created 20 years ago to provide social services to at-risk families in Carson City. At first, it was a truancy center but quickly grew into a resource center to meet the needs of area residents.

It provides assessments of eligibility for social services and makes referrals for people to obtain social services from other agencies and organizations.
