Nevada wind celebration with two-day festival

A two-day festival celebrating Nevada’s famous wind will offer an artisan marketplace, kite-making and flying demonstrations and music from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Dangberg Home Ranch in Minden.

Something in the Wind is a joint project of the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park and the Carson Valley Arts Council. The weekend’s events are sponsored by Bently Ranch, Soaring NV, The Record-Courier, Holiday Inn Express, and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

The event features a 30-minute presentation by kite flyers from the Rogue Valley Windchasers kite club in Brookings, Ore., at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days. Kite-flying demonstrations are going to follow the presentations, and festival organizers are encouraging anyone to bring their own kite to fly during the event.

Elementary school children can participate in several simple wind-related craft projects, including how to make a basic kite, from 10:30 a.m. to noon and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. both days. All craft supplies will be provided.

Balloon Nevada will have a hot air balloon on display both mornings starting at 8 a.m., while conditions permit, with expert balloonists on hand to answer questions.

Laurie Harden of SoaringNV will give a presentation about gliding at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Throughout both days, local artists will be displaying and selling wind-related art.

A free concert by the Zephyrus Brass Quintet, an affiliate of the Carson City Symphony, will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Formed in 2011, the ensemble plays music from more than 200 works, ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music. Audience members are asked to bring their own lawn chairs.

All of the weekend’s activities are free to attend. For a full schedule of events, go to dangberghomeranch.org.

Dangberg Home Ranch is at 1450 Highway 88, about a quarter mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. Dogs are not allowed.
