Presbyterian society. The May party for children given at Corbett’s Hall was pleasant and well attended. There was music and a convention of the girls and boys in which they elected their chairman and secretary, and chose and crowned their Queen of May. They carried out this part of the program with spirit. May the seasons bring a return of like festivities.

Coast brevities. Though the season is early, bathing has already begun in Walker Lake. Catfish from six inches to a foot in length are being caught in Horseshoe Lake below Sutro. Robbery attempts by footpads on the road between Candelaria and Pickhandle Gulch are reported.

The Balon [sic] Ascension. Professor Mars will have a “balon” ascension. A number of businessmen have subscribed a good sum to start the ball rolling. The “high air work” is stated by all who know him to be the finest ever given on the coast ...

Dionne quintuplets. The quints celebrated their 11th birthday party. Yvonne, Cecile, Marie, Emilie and Annette got no advance hints of their birthday surprises. Papa Oliva Dionne said he hoped they wouldn’t have to go to school that day.

The 21st annual Award Night of the Carson City High School saw 107 individual accolades presented by the members of the student body. Fred Jones, President of the student body, was master of ceremonies.

15 Years Ago

Steve and Kathy Boeche are opening a franchise Dairy Queen at 3198 Highway 50 East in Carson City — Dilly bars, parfaits and Blizzards are now available.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
