150 Years Ago

Oldest man in the world. In Caledonia, Wisc., lives Joseph Crele, who is 139 years old, according to his record of baptism. He speaks English quite imperfectly, but converses fluently in French. He is active, chops wood and walks several miles.

130 Years Ago

Attacked by an eagle. Tom Winster had been prospecting in Camp Creek country with the 7-year-old son of Wm. McCormick of Bullion. He sent the boy on horseback to the creek to get some water, and an eagle swooped down and seized the boy by the shoulders and raised him up in the saddle. The boy was too heavy and the eagle dropped him. The boy’s back and shoulders show the marks of the eagle’s talons.

110 Years Ago

All sorts. A hobo named L. St. Clair found $400 in an old rock chimney he was employed to tear down near Eureka. He had a fine time while the money lasted.

70 Years Ago

Victory over Japan speech. President Truman will make a V-J proclamation in a radio address to the American people after the formal signing of Pacific surrender terms, on board the USS Missouri, off Tokyo.

50 Years Ago

Detergent for cows. Detergents used to wash clothes and dinner dishes may solve the problem of bloat when cattle gorge themselves with green alfalfa. The detergent should act as an anti-foam agent in the first of a cow’s four stomachs.

15 Years Ago

A 5.2 point earthquake hit residents in the Northern California area. Thousands lost power, and two people were injured — 78 were forced to stay in a shelter.
