Cure for whooping cough. Whooping cough is prevalent in Sacramento. It is prevalent among the children of that city, and the connection that it has between inhalation of the gas which come from the “purifying room” of the gas works has indicated that it is an excellent remedy for whooping cough — a number of children have been cured. A big baptism. There was a scene at Shaw’s Hot Springs when the Second Adventists, who have been camping in Carson for some time, drove out to the springs in carriages and immersed 14 people, mostly ladies.

They went into the large swimming tank in bathing costumes and were immersed by being laid out backward and placed entirely beneath the surface. Then the service was read by the ministers. All agreed that they preferred warm water to cold to be baptized in.

The Hanging of Hancock. At 20 minutes of 11, state prisoner John Hancock settled his accounts with society. The execution was the first under the new law. His last words were, “Standing here today, whether in the morning or afternoon, I know not which it is, I wish to say that I freely forgive all persons who have had a hand in my prosecution ... I am innocent of this crime. I go to my death an innocent man.”

Bathing beauties. A contest to feature bathing beauties will be one of the features of the Nevada Day celebration. The only restriction on contestants is that all bathing suits must be in the style of 1864.

Lake Tahoe Horizon. Merle Haggard, country music legend, will be playing at the Grande Lake Theater. Haggard is considered one of country music’s immortals.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
