Carson City Animal Shelter moving toward September completion

Carson City’s new animal shelter is on schedule to open for business in September.

City Manager Nick Marano said he’s hesitant to predict the shelter is going to be done early but he’s happy with the performances of contractor Shaheen-Beauchamp.

In addition, the Humane Society, which has already contributed some $200,000 to the $4 million project, has applied for grant funding to expand the capacity of the new shelter. Kimberly Wade of the Humane Society said the organization has not yet been awarded more grant money for the project.

The new building at Butti Way and Airport Road will replace a half-century old critics describe as seriously out of date.

Most of the funding is coming from an eighth-cent sales tax hike city supervisors are using to bond for the cost. The Carson Animal Services Initiative also has contributed about $200,000 to the project.

When complete, the shelter will have 10,000 square feet to house up to 134 dogs and 104 cats along with a smaller number of “exotic” animals.
