Two public officials were honored Friday morning by a group of Carson City kindergartners.

Michele Cacioppo’s kindergarten class at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School honored Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and Sheriff Ken Furlong with a homemade book they dedicated to the two public servants. Crowell and Furlong had been in Cacioppo’s classroom earlier in the year to read to the kids during Read Week, and when the students wrote their own book, they voted to dedicate their work to the mayor and sheriff. The students wrote and designed a book titled “What I want to be when I grow up” and gave two published copies to the men.

“(Furlong and Crowell were) really motivating to them to learn how to read because they came in and not only read to the kids but they also explained how reading and writing is used in their careers,” Cacioppo said. “It just connects what they learn outside of the classroom and they have a reason to learn. The students also really love knowing who they are and you get that connection to the community.”

The students invited Crowell and Furlong to their class Friday morning to present their surprise to the men.

“This is for you, thank you for reading to us,” said kindergartner Everett Hogan.

The two men read through the homemade book with the kids, talking with them to see why they chose the occupations they wrote about. At the end, the students all gave Crowell and Furlong a group hug with choruses of “thank you Kenny, thank you Mayor!” “This is great guys,” Crowell said. “This just makes my day. I am going to put this up in City Hall so that everyone can see it.”
