SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Big thank you to firefighters

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Thanks to the valiant effort of Carson City firefighters and other agencies tremendous devastation and tragedy was avoided last Sunday when they were able to battle tough terrain and difficult windy conditions to prevent the Shooting Fire on the backside of C Hill from reaching our community.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the 15 children who became U.S. citizens during a ceremony last week at the Nevada State Museum.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the 16 teens who graduated from the Carson City Juvenile Probation’s Wilderness Program.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the USS Nevada for 30 years of service to this country — and to many more to come.

SILVER DOLLAR: To World War II veterans Norman Greenspan, 93, Hazel Ryland, 91 and Bill Steward, 92, who were recognized during last week’s United States Air Force Band of the Golden West Concert Band concert.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all the organizers and musicians who made the more than two-week long Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, which concludes today, possible.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved and supported HopeFest, which raises funds for local cancer patients.
