CITY NATIONAL BANK

City National Bank announced their support of KNBP’s Young Writer’s Contest with a $3,500 donation. The bank has supported this educational program the past two years.

SWIFT COMMUNICATIONS

Swift Communications will acquire Acres USA, an agricultural publisher and events company based in Austin, TX. The announcement was made to local staff this week. The purchase is slated to be finalized on Sept. 1, 2016.

SONWIL DISTRIBUTION CENTER

Sonwil Distribution Center announced that it has been named one of Food Logistics magazine’s “Top Third Party Logistics (3PL) and Cold Storage Providers” for the third consecutive year. Food Logistics is the only publication exclusively dedicated to covering the movement of product through the global food supply chain.

BLANCHARD, KRASNER & FRENCH

Blanchard, Krasner & French, a professional law corporation, announced its next location opening in Reno later this year. Their office will be located at 5470 Kietzke Lane, Suite 200. This will be Blanchard, Krasner & French’s second firm location.

GLOBAL TOURISM SUMMIT

The Nevada Governor’s Global Tourism Summit is coming up October 11-12 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

New this year is the International Media Marketplace with travel journalists from around the world, as well as TravelNevada’s public relations representatives from its 10 global markets. Also new this year is a spotlight on culinary tourism, with Erik Wolf, founder of the World Food Travel Association.

RENO WORKS

The City of Reno and Volunteers of America (VOA) of Northern Nevada held a graduation ceremony for the fourth class of the Reno Works program on Thursday, Aug. 18 at Reno City Hall. The graduation event also celebrated one-year of the program.

DERMODY PROPERTIES

Dermody Properties recently started construction on a 550,000-square-foot industrial facility on Las Vegas Boulevard near North Walnut Road. United Construction Company is the design-build contractor on the project. The companies expect to complete construction in the Second Quarter of 2017.

RENO FOOD TOURS

Reno Food Tours is showcasing the best local restaurants and specialty stores the Biggest Little City has to offer. Reno Food Tours will be offering guided tours in the Downtown and Midtown districts, led by a local expert on an ongoing basis.

‘Understanding Your Financial Statements’ with Bob Ash will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 12-1 p.m. at Adams Hub. This down-to-earth lunch hour session will help with profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and operating ratios.

RENO-TAHOE

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport has added 11 new flights over the past 14 months to key destinations for leisure and business travel. The new destinations include New York, Guadalajara, Orange County, Boise, Oakland, Dallas Love Field, Los Angeles, Long Beach and soon, Atlanta.

MT. ROSE

In an effort to further enhance the guest experience and allow for expanded early season operations, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe continued to make significant on-mountain investments this summer that included trail improvements and snowmaking upgrades. The resort will also bring back lift ticket and lesson specials, and welcome the return of signature events during the 2016-17 winter season.

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Herds and Harvest Program is offering “Hops: The Art of Fermentation,” Sept. 13 in Reno, Sept. 14 in Elko and Sept. 16 in Las Vegas. This workshop will cover hops selection, growing specifications, budgets and brewing. As a Herds and Harvest class, the workshop is meant to help beginning farmers and ranchers, and anyone interested in growing or brewing hops to develop agricultural entrepreneurship, implement sustainable agricultural marketing strategies and improve profitability. Teamsters Union Local 533 has relocated to new headquarters north of the University of Nevada and Hug High School. The facilities are in a recently completed office park at 1190 Selmi Drive, Suite 100, just north of N. McCarran Blvd.

GRANT WRITING

On Sept. 06 at 9 a.m. through Sept. 07 at 4 p.m., the US Department of Housing & Urban Development’s Center for Faith Based & Neighborhood Partnerships is offering a two-day workshop for organizations interested in grant writing & program development.

Attendees will leave with an understanding of how to interpret a grant application, how to craft a more competitive application and how to use an evaluation strategy to chart success. REALTORS

On Aug. 23, local Realtors visited a Reno location of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows to deliver hundreds of fully stocked backpacks to children who need them. LeadershipNVAR, NVAR’s signature program for personal and professional growth, organized the drive as part of its annual class project. Realtors donated and collected backpacks stocked with school supplies at designated locations around the state. Nevada Realtors collected more than 1,200 backpacks statewide, including more than 200 in northern Nevada.

SPARKS CITY COUNCIL

The Sparks City Council approved a contract with Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., in the amount of $373,007 for the 16th Street and F Street pedestrian improvements project. This project is federally funded and comes from the City’s 2016 community development block grant fund program.

The area between Rock Blvd. to 12th Street and Oddie Blvd. to D Street is slated for improvements for this project. The existing concrete and roadway infrastructure in this area was constructed in the early 1950s. The asphalt paving on F Street is in a deteriorated state and structural failures, cracks and surface deterioration warrant the need for reconstruction. Additionally, concrete walkways and curbs have deteriorated over time and are in need of replacement.

RENO CITY COUNCIL

The City of Reno is launching a crowdfunding campaign through FundYourPark.org to raise $11,492 to bring an inflatable obstacle course to its pools. The larger-than-life inflatable course, nicknamed the Mighty Medley, instantly transforms the pool into a floating playground for people of all ages.

UNEMPLOYMENT

In July, the unemployment rates in the metro areas fell month over month and on an annual basis. The Las Vegas unemployment rate dropped to 6.7 percent, while Reno/Sparks fell to 5.5 percent. The Carson City unemployment rate registered at 6.5 percent.

KTMB

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) announced their inaugural fundraiser, Raise the River, had more than 400 guests attend the event in the Sensory Garden at Idlewild Park. All of the proceeds from the event will support KTMB’s programs like the Truckee River Cleanup Day, Christmas Tree Recycling, Adopt-A-Spot and environmental education for children and adults throughout the region.

EDAWN

EDAWN closed out their Fiscal Year and set a new jobs assisted record of 3,002.

SEC

On Aug. 11, The US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) was asked to investigate Tahoe Resources Inc. The Justice and Corporate Accountability Project (JCAP), based in Canada, will submit a thirty-five-page report on behalf of the US-based Network in Solidarity with Guatemala (NISGUA) and the Guatemala-based Diocesan Committee in Defense of Nature.

The report asks the SEC to determine whether Tahoe Resources Inc. has failed to meet legal requirements for disclosing human rights abuses and failed to disclose lawsuits that impact the Escobal mine. Tahoe claims strong community support for its Guatemala mine, but the JCAP report says that Tahoe’s annual report shows that opposition is so severe that it cannot connect its mine to the main power grid. The SEC will determine whether Tahoe provided misleading information to investors.

FLIRTEY

Flirtey and Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited announced they have partnered on the first commercial pizza-by-drone delivery model. The two companies exhibited the first stage of their partnership with a demonstration of pizza delivery by drone in Auckland, New Zealand on August 25 2016. The successful demonstration was also attended by the Civil Aviation Authority and Minister of Transport Simon Bridges.

PATHWAYS TO AVIATION

The Aviation Learning Center at the Reno Air Races is expanding from 4800 square feet to over 104,000 square feet. Over 3000 students have been registered for field trips and it is projected that nearly 5000 students will participate in classes and hands on learning experiences. Over 10 high schools are expected to participate in High School day programs at Reno/Stead Airport during the Reno Air Races.
