The Popcorn Stand: Out to defeat Japan, Hitler

The following ran in the Carson City Daily Appeal on Monday, Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This forenoon, before the houses of Congress met, Joe Martin, leader of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, was asked:

“What will be the attitude of the Republican Party toward a declaration of war?”

Martin’s answer was:

“The Republican Party will have no attitude. We are not Republicans and we are not Democrats. WE ARE AMERICANS!”

And the vote later in the day, in both houses, demonstrated that parties and factions and differences of opinion were brushed aside and completely submerged in consideration of duty as plain, freedom-loving Americans.

Undeniably Japan was to a large degree forced into active warfare against the United States by Hitler.

Senate and House votes today in answer to Japan and Hitler must have been startling to the axis leaders in their one-sidedness.

It required only an attack by Japan to unify the Americans as they have not been brought together for a single purpose and with a single objective in many a year.

The people of the United States are out to defeat Japan and thereby put a crimp in world-domination efforts by Hitler.
