Dr. Merrill named to Renown Health executive position

Douglas G. Merrill, M.D., has been named executive vice president and chief medical and academic officer for Renown Health.

Dr. Merrill replaces Max Coppes, M.D., who is transitioning to a new joint leadership role as physician-in-chief for Renown Children’s Hospital and UNR Med Professor and Nell J. Redfield Chair of Pediatrics.

Dr. Merrill previously worked at University of California – Irvine Health, serving as chief medical officer, senior associate dean for quality and safety, and clinical professor of anesthesiology. His work helped UC Irvine Health become one of the nation’s highest-rated institutions for quality and safety. He has more than 30 years of medical, hospital and teaching experience ranging from quality and patient safety to surgical care and interdisciplinary team training.

Dr. Merrill earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency in anesthesiology at Stanford University. He also received his Master of Business Administration at the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa. He will complete his Masters in Bioethics and Medical Humanities this spring.
