Tahoe-based Kozy Core necklaces combat the cold of chilly offices, brisk adventures

Jarid Davis has lived in Tahoe for a half-decade, and considers himself a “mountain town guy” with a lot of time spent in high-altitude locales. After numerous stops in the mountains, even he struggles to shake the chill of winter.

That’s why he created Kozy Core.

The USB-powered heated necklaces are made on the South Shore and designed with mountain lifestyles in mind. And they’re making their debut just in time to combat the colder temperatures this winter.

“It’s super simple, it’s safe and it’s low voltage,” Davis said. “It’s really, really warm.”

Davis first came up with the idea for Kozy Core while running a ski shop in Montana out of an A-frame. In the midst of a dry, cold winter, Davis turned to a rope of Christmas lights hanging in the store for warmth.

“I used to hold onto them — they were incandescent, so they were giving off a lot of heat,” Davis said. “One day I wrapped the lights around my neck — which is strange, I know — and thought, ‘Wow, that’s really cool, someone should make a product like that.’”

It turns out Davis was the man for the job. He had prior electrical training from working in a motor shop owned by his family, and began toying with the idea of creating an electric personal warmer. A few years later, Kozy Core was born.

“I was playing around with this idea, selling them to friends and people that I work with — and people ended up really liking it,” Davis said. “I thought I might as well go for this.”

Kozy Core is a heated necklace with three coils inside a tube insulated with moisture-wicking fabric — one coil hits the back of the neck and two in the front designed to keep the core warm. A low-voltage indirect current provides the heat, making it safe even as it gets warm.

“It’s warmer than it needs to be once you insulate it in a jacket,” Davis said.

The innovative product is designed to be an alternative to more expensive heated clothing and less reliable hand warmers. And the use of USB technology allows it to run while plugged into a laptop or tablet for those cold days in the office, with a rechargeable battery making it mobile while working or getting into adventure outside.
