Fremont Elementary School taking applications for pre-K

Fremont Elementary School is still taking applications for their new pre-kindergarten program starting in February.

Fremont was the last Title I school in Carson City to not have a Pre-K class, but recently, funds became available and the district decided to create the class at Fremont.

“We are so pleased that we can offer this service to all of our families now,” Fremont Principal Casey Gilles said.

Gilles said the school wasn’t able to start a class until February because it hadn’t been able to find a teacher until December. The school hired Dr. Tanya Caron, a second language teacher and pre-k teaching trainer who has been in the school district for many years.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Caron back at Fremont and in the classroom,” Gilles said. “We are so glad she applied for the position, this is her specialty.”

The pre-k class will follow the curiosity corner curriculum, which will align with what gets taught in the kindergarten classes so students can be successful moving forward in school.

“We have set it up this way so that whatever pre-k you are in, all the students get the same education and opportunities with an emphasis on oral learning and acquisition.”

The pre-k class is available to any students who is four years old by Sept. 30 and turns five no sooner than Oct. 1 of the year they attend pre-k. Special priority also will be given to students who’s second language is English, though Gilles said that hasn’t impacted the numbers and that the school has been able to accept everyone who applied. Transportation also will not be provided to students.

Classes will be from 8:40 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. There also will be a parent open house Monday, Feb. 1 from noon to 3 p.m. for parents and teachers to explore their new classroom.

To sign up a child for pre-k at Fremont, call the school office at 775-283-1200 or visit the school to obtain the paperwork.
