Community spotlight: Carson City 10s take third in district

Carson City Little League’s 10-year-old all-star squad wrapped up its District 1 play on Sunday with a 19-11 victory over Carson Valley in the third-place game at Governors Field.

Carson City rolled to an early 13-4 lead thanks to four in the first, three in the second and six in the third, and then had to hold off a furious fifth-inning comeback by Carson Valley.

Nolan Pedersen had three hits and six RBI. Anthony Planeta also contributed three hits, while Tristan Hawkins and Yaki Glenn added two hits apiece.

Jordan Sieben threw the first two innings, walking three and allowing two hits in picking up the win.

Cabela’s holds special

event for Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts will try new skills and show off their existing talents in various outdoor activities at Cabela’s for Girl Scout Adventure Day on July 27.

Activities include archery, tent set-up, fly tying, casting a fishing rod to a target and fudge making. This free and fun event is open to all Girl Scouts and designed for those entering grades 1-6 this fall.

Stations will be arranged inside and outside in front of the store. Girls will be placed by age groups into manageable groups to move through the various stations. Direction will be provided at check-in.

Check-in opens about 9 a.m. outside by the flag poles for grades 4-6; and about 9:30 for grades 1-3. Older girls will be done by about 12:30 p.m., and younger girls should finish their activities by about 11:30.

Shabi wins flight

at Empire Ranch

Jim Shabi shot a net 64 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event.

Bill Gibson was second with a 66 and Mike Vadnais was third at 67. Ray McPartlin won Flight B via tiebreaker over R.C. Crapo. Both shot a net 62. Charles Bell was third with a 66. Rene Ojeda won Flight C with a 60, four strokes clear of Tim Morsani and five better than Rich Bremenour. Jack Medeiros won Flight D with a 61, two shots better than Joe Gibson and six better than Ron Popp. Marshall McCurdy won Flight E with a 52, six shots ahead of Marty Martinez and nine ahead of Ralph Bothe.

Martinez, Crapo, Skip Yokoto and Tom Wickham were closest to the hole winners.

Collins, Greer tie

at Dayton Valley

Kitty Collins and Lynn Greer tied for low gross honors in Flight 1 at the weekly Dayton Valley Women’s Golf Club tournament. Both shot a 76.

Denise Johnson won low net with a 68. In Flight 2, Terri Paden won low gross with a 94, while Susie Flores had a net 70. In Flight 3, Carol Merchant won low gross with a 99, while Cathy Kulm and Suzanne Mohr tied for low net honors with a 72. In Flight 4, Nancee Staley won low gross with a 104, while Cheryl Smith won low net with a 75. Mary Harrison won low gross in Flight 5 with a 124 and Christine Bunnell was low net winner with a 78.

Menezes, Budjako win

at Carson Valley

Marc Menezes and Matt Budjako won Flight A with 38 points in the Carson Valley Men’s Club Stableford tournament on July 10. David Morris and Charles Poe were second with 31 points.

John Carey and Bob Van Nort won Flight B with a 47, two points ahead of Gary Carsten and Jim Arens. Joe Morrison and Dan Essary were closest to the hole winners.

Flag Football to begin soon

The Talents Carson City NFL Flag Football League will offer a fall season for boys and girls ages 10-13 (9-year-olds may also be accepted). League play is planned from the second week of September through the end of October. Signups will be held in August and more information will be coming at that time.
