A spokesman said the contractor is beginning heavy construction to improve and extend the roadway that currently goes from Interstate 80 into the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. The project will extend the road all the way to U.S. 50 in Dayton.

The single-lane closures will continue through the end of the year on weekdays as crews install guardrail, grade roadside slopes and make other improvements.

Only local business traffic will be allowed south of Sydney Ways, the last major interchange on the Parkway.

From that point on, major construction has also begun to extend the roadway through the Virginia Range.

The $75.9 million project will be completed in late 2017.
