A midnight fire — More Incendiarism: Our city was awakened from its repose and the firemen were summonsed to their duty about 2 o’clock yesterday morning by an alarm of fire which had its origin in the burning of tow unoccupied houses in the northwestern part of this place. The fire was first discovered in the upper part of Mr. Small’s house, and it could have been confined to that building had it been possible to obtain water for the engines, but there was not water in the streams and no cisterns in that part of town. The fire was put out eventually by mere exhaustion.

The Lying Club of Empire has burst end up. It started out with brilliant prospects, but owing to internal dissension, it was not a success. It had obtained its regular charter from the Sazarac Lying Club of Austin — the chief of all lying clubs of the world — and ought to have succeeded, for there is genuine talent of the right wort in Empire to achieve distinction in that direction.

Chinese bootlegger caught. A person of Chinese descent named Chop Suey was arrested Saturday evening by United States Marshal Gray for selling liquor to Indians. Suey has been under suspicion for two years, and it was Saturday night, with the help of an Indian decoy, that he was caught in the act.
