Education briefs: Area students place as top spellers

As part of her senior project at Carson High School, Briana Mueller collected helmets for the Sierra Therapeutic Equestrian Program. Over the last five months she has raised $500 for the riding program through recruiting members; $300 was used to purchase helmets and the remainder will be used for scholarships to the nonprofit program.

Fernley woman advances in writing contest

Fernley’s Kate Julicher is the published finalist in the 32nd annual Writers of the Future contest, an international writing competition that’s judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction.

Julicher was chosen from this year’s group of finalists to have her short story published in the annual best seller, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 32. She will be flown to Hollywood for a week long intensive professional workshop, and she will be honored at an awards gala.
