Local kids are invited to dress up and get some early trick-or-treating in at a Halloween event to benefit underprivileged families in the Carson City area.
Instead of door to door, trick-or-treaters can collect candy from trunk to trunk 7-9 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Nevada Appeal.
In addition to trick-or-treating, the inaugural event offers games, raffle prizes, pumpkin carving and prizes for best costume and best decorated trunk.
A costume closet will be set up so children in need can pick out a costume to take home.
The free event benefits Wishes & Angels, a Northern Nevada nonprofit who helps local families pay for birthday, graduation, prom and holiday celebrations they otherwise couldn’t afford.
“This month we just helped five families who couldn’t afford to throw a birthday party or provide a gift to their child,” said Krisha Scannapieco, who’s on the Wishes & Angles Board of Directors. “One little girl had never had a birthday party.”
In its third year, the nonprofit adopts local families to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. It sponsors celebrations by paying for birthday cakes, presents and other items.
“We actually meet with each family that we help so we can personalize the experience,” Scannapieco said.
Organizers are expecting 150-200 kids to participate in the trunk or treat event.
Volunteers are needed to host trunks, decorate and pass out candy.
