The pedestrian journalist: Mr. Schaffer, the great German traveler who has walked some 75,000 miles within a few years past and who, in fact is making the grand rounds of the world, on foot, called upon us yesterday. Mr. Schaffer intends tramping over Mexico and China, and, when he gets back to Faderland, he means to write the story of his extended walk.

All Verdi turned out last night to greet Senator Francis G. Newlands, who made one of the most comprehensive and forceful addresses delivered during the present campaign. The insanity of the nations tearing at each other’s throats with American standing by offering a helping hand, but powerless to stop the carnage, was one of the pictures he drew (continued Saturday).

70 years ago

Three police radio stations now are operating in Nevada out of a state-wide network of 22 proposed cities and towns which police authorities hope to put in operation over the period of years.

50 years ago

Ladies of Nevada will be the theme of this year’s Nevada Day Parade Oct. 31. Leading the parade will be Grand Marshalls Sade Grant and Roberta Sharp. This year they will head the parade by riding in a convertible.

30 years ago

Carson City Mayor Dan Flammer was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after his wife took his blood pressure and found it to be very low. Flammer is in the intensive care unit at the Carson-Tahoe Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
