Nevada receives $100,000 rural highway transportation grant

For the third year in a row, Nevada has been awarded the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Highly Rural Transportation Grant (HRTG) to support transportation programs in Nye and Elko Counties. This year’s award of $100,000 will be used to assist rural veterans travelling to VA medical clinics and hospitals.

“This grant continues the important work of ensuring that Nevada becomes the most military and veteran-friendly state in the nation,” said Governor Brian Sandoval in a press release. “I understand the incredible value that Nevada veterans, from our WWII veterans to those returning home from service today, add to our communities. I remain committed to ensuring that every Nevada veteran and their families has access to services they need and are honored for their service to our nation.”

According to Kat Miller, Director of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS), her agency has been working closely with federal and county partners to help ensure that no matter where in Nevada a veteran lives, they have information and access to services that improve their lives and the lives of their families. “This opportunity provided by the VA will allow us to focus on a rural area with available resources in the community,” says Miller. “It will be both a great benefit to veterans as well as an economic opportunity for transportation providers in the rural area.”

Funding for the grant will be made available to NDVS during the coming months and the department will then begin the process of creating agreements with county officials in Elko and Nye Counties.
