Events planned in Carson City area in celebration of Earth Day

Northern Nevadans are gathering today to learn about environmental issues, clear public spaces of trash and more in celebration of Earth Day.

The Northern Nevada March for Science, a peaceful march in support of science, will take place at 10 a.m. in Reno. A carpool will leave Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus at 8:30 a.m.

The route is 0.3 miles from the Thompson Federal Building on Virginia Street to the Believe Plaza where community leaders will speak to the importance of science.

Reno is one of 200 cities worldwide marching to protect scientific censorship.

Muscle Powered’s Trash Mob will be clearing the freeway multi-use path of litter from 8 to 9 a.m. Volunteers can meet at the parking lot between Dotty’s and US Bank to pick up trash in the field near Home Depot and along the multi-use trail. Make your own miniature garden in celebration of Earth Day from 11 a.m. to noon at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. The Greenhouse Project will be on hand to offer tips on how to make a garden. Seating and materials are limited, and registration is required. “Burning,” a performance that centers on climate change, will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center. Written and performed by Heather Harpham, the show uses movement, song, monologue and images to touch on Hurricane Sandy, society’s penchant for apocalyptic movies, and other topics. Tickets are $15 for BAC members, $20 for general admission and $18 for students and seniors. The film will be shown in the BAC’s Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater, 449 W. An Earth Day advocacy workshop is planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce of Reno, Sparks and Norther Nevada, 449 S. Virginia St., Reno. The event, sponsored by Women Voters of Northern Nevada, includes lunch. RSVP at LWVNNEarthDay.eventbrite.com.
