WNC News & Notes: Participants sought for annual Veterans Suicide Awareness March

The Western Nevada College Student Veterans Club and the WNC Veterans Resource Center invite the community to partake in the third annual Veterans Suicide Awareness March at 10 a.m. on May 6 in Carson City.

Participants will walk from the intersection of U.S. Highway 395 and West College Parkway to the WNC campus at 2201 W. College Parkway, and back, approximately 2.3 miles round trip.

The event brings attention to the ongoing reality of veteran suicide, which occurs approximately 22 times a day across the United States, and every 2.75 days in Nevada. Along the way, walkers will view signage that shares caring thoughts of veterans and also acknowledges the suffering and needs many veterans bring home from battle.

After arriving on campus, participants will place small American flags on the college’s front lawn to show solidarity with those who serve. Participation is free and donations will be accepted.

WNC Selected from Thousands for Best Value Award

Affordability, student satisfaction and exemplary academics are reasons why Western Nevada College is the recipient of the 2017 Best Value School Award.

WNC was selected out of nearly 8,000 postsecondary schools for the Best Value School Award, which is issued by University Research & Review, a company dedicated to improving the process of how a student selects a postsecondary school.

WNC was chosen by the committee because it passed rigorous standards, including a combination of cost, accreditation, variety and quality of school programs, and student satisfaction with the institution.

The Best Value School Awards are designed to assist students in selecting a higher education institution that combines quality education, career and professional direction and financial value.

WNC Recognizes PTK Honor Society Inductees

Forty-one Western Nevada College students earned induction into the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society during ceremonies April 22 and 28 on the college’s Carson City and Fallon campuses.

During the ceremonies, the inductees read an oath of membership pledge and performed a candle lighting to receive a spark from a flame, thus promoting their own individuality according to the Greek myth.

PTK was created in 1918 and has served as a means to honor and encourage academic achievement of community college students. The organization also provides opportunities for individual student growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming.

In order for WNC students to qualify for PTK membership, they must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree coursework with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher throughout their enrollment at the college.
