In 1 Samuel 19, David is being stalked, plagued and threatened by his enemies. Saul tried to pin him to the wall with a spear, but David slipped away into the night. Saul then sends soldiers to David’s house to watch him and then kill him in the morning.
As David is in his house that night, he prays what we now call Psalm 59. “God, save me from my enemies ... God loves me, and he will help me win. He will help me defeat my enemies ... But I will sing about your strength. I will rejoice in your love every morning. You have been my place of safety, the place I can run to when troubles come. I will sing praises to you, my source of strength. You, God, are my place of safety. You are the God who loves me!”
Well, God does protect and deliver David. Eventually David becomes the undisputed king of Israel. After all, he was a man after the heart of God.
It seems as though we all have our enemies. And, they’re not always people. My enemies include temptations, trials, illness, procrastination and pessimism.
These warriors attempt to destroy me and steal my peace of mind and even my relationship with God.
“God, save me from my enemies! You have been my place of safety, the place I can run to when troubles come. I will sing praises to you, my source of strength. You, God, are my place of safety. You are the God who loves me!”
