UNR's Integrated Marketing Communications team placed in AMA Collegiate Case Competition

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Integrated Marketing Communications team is headed to New Orleans for the 39th International Intercollegiate Conference, March 16-18, 2017. The team will receive a trophy as a semi-finalist in the fall 2016 annual American Marketing Association Collegiate Case Competition. The team competed against 99 universities and placed in the top 17 of the nation in the challenge to generate a marketing strategy for eBay. During the conference in New Orleans, they will participate in several small competitions including a marketing strategy contest, as well as have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals. The purpose of the American Marketing Association Case Competition is two-fold. First, it is to provide American Marketing Association undergraduate members the opportunity to work together on a problem that typifies a real, working marketing situation. Second, it is to provide the Case Competition sponsor direct contact with the very best marketing students with possible real world solutions to their marketing problem. This year, the American Marketing Association Collegiate Case Competition was sponsored by eBay. “Despite its two decades of success, eBay faces an increasingly crowded and competitive market with competition from rivals such as Amazon, Alibaba, craigslist, and Etsy. Heavy investment from both entrenched competitors and an evolving landscape of startups compounds the challenge for eBay,” the eBay case brief outlined as their challenge. "The goal was to show that eBay had changed to reach millennials and promote eBay's useful features." Igor Makienko, associate professor of marketing at the University and the AMA faculty adviser, said in an interview with Nevada Today. The American Marketing Association Club is conducting fundraising to help offset the cost of the trip to New Orleans. The Club will meet March 7, April 4 and April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Graduate Student Lounge in the Joe Crowley Student Union. “During the last seven years this is the third time our team has received national recognition," Makienko said in an email with NNBW. He mentioned the team's third place finish in 2011 and top 20 placement in 2012. For more information about the club or to learn about their fundraising efforts, email Matt Starrett (mstarret@nevada.unr.edu), president of the AMA student chapter, or email Igor Makienko (imakienko@unr.edu), AMA club faculty adviser.
