Washoe County seeks shooting ban when fire risks present

RENO — Washoe County officials have requested the drafting of an ordinance that could prohibit target shooting when wildfire threats are present.

County commissioners asked Tuesday for the district attorney to draft the measure for officials to consider at a later date.

The measure seeks to give authority to the county manager, in consultation with the chief of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief, to identify areas in the county where target shooting could be banned when certain conditions pose fire risks. Conditions for a ban could include high winds and lacking precipitation.

Truckee Meadows Fire officials say target shooting has been a frequent cause of wildfires in the county.

Officials say the measure would not apply to target shooting at approved ranges.
