Bobcat sighting in Carson City; Nevada Department of Wildlife says it is not unusual

The Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Reno office has been receiving numerous calls concerning bobcat sightings. But the department said bobcats in the area are nothing out of the ordinary.

Ashley Sanchez, public information officer for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, said it’s just become easier to spot the wildcats because of the considerable amount of snow the area has been receiving.

That was demonstrated on Thursday when Millie Karol captured a photo of bobcat in the snow in the Westwood/Timberline area of Carson City and posted it to Facebook. Karol told the Appeal the bobcat has been seen in the area for the past week.

“They’re always out and about,” said Sanchez about bobcats. “We think what’s happening is the snow makes it easier to spot them. It reminds us we’re surrounded by wilderness. It’s generally normal for this to happen.”

Sanchez noted the times when bobcats come out most often are at dawn and dusk. She also stressed people should take precautions such as keeping their pets inside and not leaving trash out.
