OSHA launches heat-stress protection program

Federal OSHA has launched a National Emphasis program to help protect workers from heat illness and injuries. Effective June 15, Nevada OSHA adopted the NEP by proactively initiating inspections in over 70 high-risk industries prescribed by the Federal OSHA and additional industries identified by Nevada OSHA.

Inspections cover indoor and outdoor settings when the National Weather Service has issued a heat warning or advisory for a local area. The NEP is to remain effective until cancelled or modified by a change to the Federal NEP or adoption of a Nevada-specific heat illness regulation. Nevada businesses and employees are also invited to participate in a training course on heat-stress safety in the workplace.

The course will be available online at www.4safenv.state.nv.us for free starting July 29.

Participants will learn how to recognize heat illness symptoms, learn first-aid procedures, and how heat-related illness can be avoided. For more information, visit www.osha.gov
